Adoption of a foreigner 1 Year, 9 Months ago

A 17 year old young man from Iraq has been living with a family here in the U.S. He's here on an overseas study program for a semester. Hi mom, who's in Iraq, doesn't want her son to return because of the current situation and turmoil in the country. She's even willing to let the U.S. family adopt him. Understanding her plea, the U.S. family would love for the young man to remain with them, but they're not sure if they should be hiring an adoption lawyer, or an immigration lawyer? Any suggestions?

Immigration issue are inherint in many adoption cases. Hence, obtain an attorney who has experience in both.
Review your local Bar Journal for a referral.

When looking for a lawyer, do not be afraid to ask for references on such cases. Adopting a child is a long and many times expensive process that involves a great deal of emotion, so check the attorney you hire out before you decide to put your future childs issues in her or his hands.
