debtors prison 1 Year, 8 Months ago Karma: 2
Detroit's former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has been sentenced to prison for violating probation. The violation of his probation was that he was not paying his restitution to the City of Detroit. As a result, Kwame is serving a minimum of a year and half to a maximum of five years, minus 120 days for time already served. The cost to house Kwame in jail is about $40,000 per year and he will be earning 9 cents per hour working at the prison. At this rate, he will be lucky to repay 20% of the amount due over the rest of his lifetime.

He's not in prison because he failed to make his payments, but because he violated the terms of his probation and he lied to the court, again.

To add to his misery, former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was indicted today by a federal grand jury with 10 counts of mail fraud, three counts of wire fraud, five counts of filing a false tax return, and one count of tax evasion. Each fraud count carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000, and each tax count carries a maximum sentence of three or five years and a fine of $250,000.

Whats interesting about his new federal indictment is that if Kwame pleads and gets time, it will run concurrently with his state matter. If he fights the federal indictment then it could be over a year before there is a resolution and if found guilty and he finished serving his time in state prison then he could be sent back to prison for the federal charges. Look for a plea that runs concurrent to the existing time being served.
