I want to take a poll of the forum community to see how many different areas of law they practice and if they changed their area of concentration right away or sometime later. I guess i'm really trying to see what people go sick of or what people wanted to avoid.

I started off doing exclusively estate planning and as my client base grew, so to did my menu of services. Now i do more corporate transactional work than estate planning. I'd say that i even enjoy it more than estate planning. The corporate engagement are larger, more involved and yield great per engagement fees. I think that everyone's practice evolves over time and you will end up where your skills and your clients take you.

My father started as a prosecutor and went out on his own doing criminal defense and now he has an 8 attorney bankruptcy practice.

Stay away from worker's compensation and probate otherwise you will be looking for another profession in about 2 yrs.

What about starting out as a prosecutor, for the experience, then working the defense side after a few years so that you can make more money?
