With the down turn in the economy over the years, is there an updated listing of attorney salaries to reflect market conditions?

Their data is based off of general data such as years of experience and location. But, many midsized and small firms dont publish their salary data and other factors such as other licenses, books of business, prior experience.

The problem is that payscales vary hughly per state. For example, the salaries for attorneys in Idaho are lower than NY salaries. The best you can find is a guesstimate.

I dont think the salary charts reflect the current market trends, such as the adjustments in pay for first year associates at multistate and multinational law firms which have scaled back from their hiring and pay. In this economy, especially in Ohio and Michigan which are blue collar manufacturing states with high unemployment, firms are asking partners and associates alike to take pay deductions, or risk job loss.

The best way to determine salary and compensation scales is to ask a head hunter that places attorneys. They have the most up to date data bases.

I want to see if attorney when interviewing at firms as for salary charts or ranges from the prospective employer. How do you know if you are getting a fair wage compared with your peers? How much negotiating room is there when discussing wages with a new employer?
