If you live in Illinois, consider checking out the link below. The Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan started a program to encourages law students to apply to serve as volunteer law clerks in her office. I know that its a volunteer program, but it would look great on a resume and would be a great way to improve your skills and knowledge in a wide range of subject areas, including consumer protection, government representation, civil rights, environmental enforcement, antitrust, complex civil litigation, civil and criminal appeals, and criminal law enforcement.

I had the opposite reaction. In fact, i think that because law firms are reducing the size of their staffs, that they are more likely to hire a law clerk as "cheap labor". I've had many offers from respectable law firms. Of course, the work is temporary, its still work and fills my resume.

Check out government jobs. The government is the largest single employer, and the prosecutors office, Department of Justice and local governments often take volunteer even if they are not hiring. It looks great on a resume. I clerked for the county probate court and it helped me land a full time paying position.
