Model Rules of Professional Conduct states that its the client who determines who she/he wants to represent them. Question: when you leave a firm what methods of contact are appropriate? Assume there is no non-compete.

That going to be dictated by the non-compete agreement. But, I don't think there is anything wrong with telling people you are moving from you old firm to another or going out on your own, as a general annoucement. But, what level of specific contact with an individual client is going to be dictated by the non-compete.

if there is no non compete then everything goes. But, it's up to the client in the end and the they have to retrieve their files from your old firm.
