In some situations, the owner of a copyrighted material is unnamed. In intellectual property circles they call the owner an "orphan". What is the best way to find out the identity of the property owner? I know that Canada now has a scheme for identifying copyright owners, but what about the U.S.?

you can search the USPTO but the name may come up an undisclosed. However, you should be able to send a letter to the address listed.

The uspto should have an address you can send a letter to and from there a communication could be sent to the holder. They do have some mechansim in place for this type of situation.
