Personal Property Taxes 1 Year, 9 Months ago Karma: 5
And while I am on the subject of taxes:

Exactly what right does a city have to send me a bill for personal property taxes - taxing the furniture in my office. Where did this come from. I put a client chair in my office and I have to remit taxes on this thing to the city in which I operate my business. Its not bad enough I had to pay sales tax when I bought it, now, for the simply "luxury" owing it and having it in my office as opposed to my house, I have to remit a tax to the city? What is this? If you ask me, we lost the Boston Tea Party - to our own government. Only the British got screwed.

Bigdaddy:

As you probably already know, the US Constitution grants the government and the states the power to tax. This power to tax is necessary for the states to maintain road, schools, etc. The personal property tax is just an extension of the state's taxing authority. Think of it as a cost of doing business.

You maybe able to contest the personal property tax if you have old or obsolete business assets or if you sell those assets and they are no longer at the business location.

Consult with the city assessor to review the tax roll and make sure that the tax is accurately assessed.
