Has anyone ever setup their deferred comp to own assets ether than securities. E.g. Real estate or business interests

IRAs can own assets other than securities. However, the IRA custodian will need to manage the investment property. So, if the IRA custodian purchases a rental, then your IRA will need to pay the custodian and management fees. Unless the IRA has over $1 million of investable assets, its highly unlikely that your IRA will generate enough return to justify the fees.
