How long is a durable power of attorney good for? Does it need to be updated every few years?

Do they need to be notarized?

A DPOA is usually good for many years. However, I recommend to my clients that they update their DPOA every few years so that the person to whom the DPOA is deliver to does not contest the validity of the document.

DPOA usually require that the principal's signature be notarized. Check your state statute for more details. In Florida and Texas a notary signature is required for all DPOAs.
