I own a 2007 Denali with navigation. The car came with a DVD loaded with maps. I found out that there is an updated version of the maps available for $299. On craigslist i found a "used" version of the updated maps for $80. If i purchase the updated maps DVD and it turns out to be pirated then what is my exposure? There is almost no way for me to obtain proof that the DVD was not lifted off the internet or copied from an original. What are others doing when purchasing used software?

Its rather straightforward. For instance, if the DVD looks like its in shabby knock off packaging, or comes with inferior instructions about how to install and use the software, or there is an unidentifiable installation medium with no labels, then its highly likely that the DVD is copied (burnt) to an off the shelf blank DVD or CD media. This also makes the software ineligible for free maintenance updates in some cases.

I would also be cautious that when buying pirated software it may have a virus and there is a risk of installing malicious code in your car's computer. When you install certain software from peer-to-peer sites or even from software purchased on DVD/CD from unauthorized channels, it’s very likely that the software could be injected with malicious code to infiltrate your system.

Not to mention that there are criminal repercussions for purchasing the pirated software. Isnt it worth $210 to just buy the OEM DVD and get a good nights sleep?

My advice is to buy legal copy of software and not to think about these things too much. Just think on people who built and work on this software. How they will get paid if you dont pay your piece of software? And , how many others think similar in this moment? On the other hand, many of illegal copies of software contain different worms, bugs, viruses and other little programs that may cost you more than $200. Think twice before you make right decision.

While i am aware that there are criminal penalties for pirating software, i have never heard of anyone being prosecuted for buying pirated software. Doesnt seem as if there is much enforcement. Look at what happend to the owner of napster.....nothing!
