Having a sentence communted - public policy 4 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 0
The following article was taken from the Detroit News on 5-13-08. I thought it was interesting and it will be even more interesting to find out if this woman is returned to jail or if her sentence is communted by the Governor.

Fugitive back in Michigan after 32 years
David Eggert / Associated Press

LANSING -- A suburban housewife arrested in San Diego 32 years after she escaped from a Detroit-area prison is back in Michigan to serve out at least 5 ½ years on drug charges.

Susan Lefevre arrived at the Robert Scott Correctional Facility in Northville Township about 2 p.m. Tuesday. The prison is about 20 miles west of Detroit.

The 53-year-old mother of three was arrested April 24 outside her home in an affluent area of San Diego. Authorities say she never told her husband and children of her criminal past.

Michigan officials say LeFevre could be eligible for parole after serving about 5 ½ years.

Her attorney has said he plans to ask that her sentence be commuted by Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm.

Prison is about punishment, not reform. She will likely do time. I dont agree with it but that is how our system is setup.

If reform was a priority then recidivisim rates would not be so high.

I don't see this sentence being communted. She escaped while in jail, and got to live 32 years without doing her time, had a family and lived life without interuption. I think she is going to prison. Even though, when she get there, its only going to be a couple of years with her good time credits and the over-crowding problem.
