There was an interesting article in Crains Detroit Business which showcased that law school apps are up in this economy even though law school deans say that fewer law school grads are finding work. That hasn't stop tuition from increasing at law schools and apparently hasnt stopped people from wanting to get a law degree.

In a depressed economy where most people are trying to improve their income and profession by increasing their technical education. They is this belief that medicine and law provide the best income and work life balance. The truth is that being self employed greats the greatest reward and work life balance. Everyone is just chasing the dream.

That article even gave stats on the percentage of graduates that landed jobs post bar exam. Did you notice that U of M, a top 10 law school had the best job placement. Not sure if the job placement was due to career services or the pedigree of having a U of M law degree.

While application levels have risen, acceptances have remained even. According to recent data by the ABA, enrollment for first-year law students was flat for the fall of 2009. The number of men enrolled fell by 2 percent and the number of women rose 2.4 percent.
Total enrollment for J.D. programs rose by 2.9%, from 141,031 to 141,433 students attending the 196 law schools accredited by the ABA. First-year minority students enrolled in J.D. programs increased 0.9%, but as a percentage of the first-year class, they dropped from 22.4% to 22.3%. Among all students enrolled in J.D. programs, 75,383 were men and 66,050 were women.

The problem is that the law school admissions committees are motived by profits and they admit students just to fill class rooms. Med schools limit the number of students and there is a shortage of MDs and DOs out in the field. Pretty soon having a law degree will be like have an undergrad, everyone will have one.
