I was toldd that you don't have to have any law school classes to sit for the patent bar. That, passing the patent bar without a JD makes you a patent agent and then once you obtain a JD and pass any state's bar exam you become a patent attorney. Both a patent agent and a patent attorney can practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

What good is being a patent agent without a JD

You are right, you can be a patent agent without having a JD. But who hires a patent agent?
