Law School Debt and Job Prospects 7 Years, 9 Months ago Karma: 3
I came across an interesting article in the NY Time titled: Is Law School a Losing Game? Written by DAVID SEGAL, Published: January 8, 2011. See link below.
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/09/business/09law.html?_r=2&emc=eta1

The article talks about the cost of law school education, the growing debt of law school grads who have been unsuccessful finding jobs, job placement number-fudging by the law schools and the profitability of law schools.

Check it out and let me know what you think. If you are a recent law school grad, do you think that attending law school was a wise choice? If you plan on applying to law school, did this article change your mind?

I agree with the article. Law School professors are amongst the highest paid professors at universities and universities see law schools as a huge profit center that they market and lure students to and this profit center helps universities to fund other programs or to subsidize other programs which are not at profitable.

The article probably has a lot of truth to it, but when you consider other degree program, such an an MBA or other certificate programs, a law degree still hold higher prestige and credibility. I also think that a law degree is more durable than an MBA. So, that being said, if we were going to spend money on an MBA or a law degree, i'd still pick a law degree in the hopes that it would provide me with more choices than the MBA.

I'm sure the MBA schools fudge the numbers too in order to increase enrollment. Education centers are really businesses in disguise.

What i would like to know is how much pretax income do you need to make in order to properly make payments and service the debt on $140,000 of law school loans. Not sure how long the repayment term will be, but the rate of interest is about 6%.
