Is it necessary to get involved with political or social organizations in order to get a clerkship? Are clerkships given to "friends" or can anyone just apply for the position?

Judicial clerkships are offered to all applicants. The key is to find out about them. They are usually filled by friends of the judge or judicial staff etc. For higher courts, they usually only take top tier applicants from ivy league schools and who have excellent research and writing capabilities.

They usually prefer students with law review experience.

Sometimes the judicial clerk is an attorney. This attorney will does all the research and practically writes jude's opinion.

FYI.....being politicial will cost you money and is no guarantee for a clerkship. Plus, being a clerk may not provide the best experience for you. Working for a firm gives you great business experience and provides an excellent environment in which to challenge you and grow your career. Clerkships are temporary summer employment.

The politicians have enough money, so if you want to be involved with politics, donate your time (which is money) and donate to charity.

I was part of a student republican association and I met many Judges and attorneys. I have their cards and when I get into law school they promised me that I could get an internship.

So, I think that being politically active can help you network and possibility help you hand a job.

Post edited by: Sarah, at: 2007/08/30 16:33
