letter of recommendations 8 Months ago
I need to submit letters of recommendation to the law schools with my application. I am applying to Univ of Mich and Univ of Chicago. I dont have any alums to write letters, but i do have a friend that donates to Univ of Mich. Would a letter of recommendation from a contributor of the school carry any weight? My GPA and LSAT are strong (3.63 & 164).

It would help if your reference was an attorney and could say something about whether you would make a good attorney. Make sure that you also use a professional reference, e.g. someone you worked with.

I was told by my business law professor, that getting published or having been published is in the top 5 most important criteria for law school admission. I have not been published and i have little real work experience. I have written many papers for school, but nothing as detailed or research as what the law schools are looking for. Will that hurt my chances? Should i volunteer at a law firm to get some writing experience?

Getting published is definitely a positive soft factor for your application. In addition, many on the admit committee are professors and scholars, so they appreciate the effort that goes into being published. Consider volunteering for a professor who is getting ready to publish so that you can assist and get your name listed. You can also mention in the application that your article will be published in XXX months.

I appreciate the comments. I took a prof out to lunch and agreed to do some research and writing and he will help with the reference letter and I will get the recommendation that i need and be able to fill in on the LS app that i helped author an article. Hope that does the trick!

good idea. If possible, include a copy of the article. Or sent it to the law school after your application was submitted.
