Henkel I don't think the targeted LOR will help unless their ties are so strong (they donate $$$ to their alma mater)

The purpose of an LOR is to recommend you not promote the writers relationship to benefit you.

Unless the recommender can give specific reasons why you would be an excellent addition to U of M or Cornell or somewhere else I think it is a waste of your recommender's time to advertiser the recommender's relationship with the school and will not benefit you.
pmixer In continuation of the prior post on LOR:

How strong should a recommender's connection be to the law school where s/he is writing your LOR?

One of my LOR writers did his PhD at U of M, and another writer did his undergraduate work at Cornell. Do you think I should ask for targeted letters to those three schools, even though their study there were in a field other than law?

I know that people often say that targeted letters don't matter all that much, but I think that little things like that make a difference and help you stand out in the application process.
