Samantha The social security admin and pension plan administrators can split social security benefits and retirement plan benefits upon divorce by using a QDRO.

If a QDRO is not used, then when a couple splits the courts may award the social security "poor" spouse other assets or additional alimony in order to compensate him/her for the loss of social security benefits from teh social security "rich" spouse.
Brian Client has been married for over thirty years and spouse was the bread winner. If they split can she get some of his SS benefits? How does that work. What about his health insurance from work?
